Description: Portrait of Thomas Brown, Hallie Q. Brown's father. This image is found in a small wooden frame. Hallie Q. Brown was the daughter of freed slaves Thomas and Frances Jane who were actively involved with the Underground Railroad. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Wilberforce University and later became Dean of Women at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. Brown helped found the National Association of Colored Women (NACW), was elected Secretary of Education of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1900 and served as the 7th National President of the NACW. Description: This portrait shows an elderly James Madison Bell, of Gallipolis, Ohio, wearing formal attire. Born April 3, 1826, Bell was a poet, orator and anti-slavery activist, and a free man of color whose poetry was dedicated to abolition. He lived briefly in Chatham, Ontario, Canada, a significant stop on the Underground Railroad, before moving to California where some of his poems were published in The Pacific Appeal, an African American newspaper in San Fransisco. In 1901, he published 27 of his poems in a book: "The Poetical Works of James Madison Bell." This print originally appeared in his book. View on Ohio Memory.
